About the Canadian Environmental Crime Research Network (CECRN)
Our Network
The CECRN is an interdisciplinary initiative focused on fostering collaboration to improve understanding the causes, consequences, and mitigation of environmental crime. We define environmental crime broadly, to encompass various forms of illegal activities harming the environment. The network brings together researchers, practitioners, and institutions to collaborate, share knowledge, and produce impactful research outputs that contribute to the science-policy interface on environmental law and justice. CECRN empowers these stakeholders to create a civic space where community-based responses to policy, funding and institutional reform can be heard, reaffirming the need for national and international cooperation against environmental crime.

The Canadian Environmental Crime Research Network (CECRN) began as a small initiative and has since grown into a vibrant, interdisciplinary community of over forty academic researchers, practitioners, journalists, and civil society professionals from across Canada and around the world. Our mission is to foster collaboration and advance understanding around the complex and urgent issues related to environmental crime. On May 8–9, 2025, CECRN hosted its inaugural symposium at Ontario Tech University in Oshawa. This landmark event brought together researchers, journalists, practitioners, and members of the public to share knowledge, showcase cutting-edge research, and engage in meaningful dialogue. The symposium marked the formal establishment of the Network and set the tone for its future direction, highlighting both the critical challenges and the inspiring possibilities within this evolving field.
Our Purpose
Facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration amongst environmental crime researchers, including academics, practitioners, and media and communications.
Advance knowledge creation in relevant disciplines, including but not limited to: criminology, sociology, psychology and behavioural science, geography, legal studies, history, political science, economics, forensic sciences, technology, public administration, and ecology and conservation biology.
Provide a platform for the exchange of ideas, data, research outputs, and best practices, which can also be communicated to the general public, civil society, the private sector, and public officials.
Influence policy and practice by contributing to evidence-based advocacy and decision-making in a variety of areas including environmental law, trade, forestry, ocean conservation, and more.
Uphold ethical standards and integrity in research, data use, and collaboration, which will be fundamental to the Network’s operations.
